Welcome to "Princess Sophie of France Forums & Files"

Hi!

Welcome to the "Princess Sophie of France Forums and Files" blog, where I share information and knowledge about one of my favorite historical royals, Princess Sophie of France (1734-1782). This blog is a hotspot for all information regarding Princess Sophie, including letters, archives, portraits, portrait information, fashions and undergarments during the time of Princess Sophie, her family, her legacy, the "Let them eat cake" rumors regarding Sophie, and more.

Who is Princess Sophie?

Princess Sophie was the sixth daughter and eighth child of King Louis XV of France and his wife, Queen Maria Leszczyńska of France. In 1738, Sophie and her sisters (Victoire, Thérèse and Louise) were sent to live at the Abbey of Fontevraud. Sophie was only three years old; she wouldn't return until 1750, aged sixteen. It was in 1748 that Sophie's parents received a portrait of her.

The portrait, alongside that of the portraits, too, painted of Victorie and Louise, saddened Maria Leszczyńska. She hadn't seen Victorie, Louise, Thérèse (*whom had died aged eight in 1744 at the Abbey of Fontevraud due to smallpox), or Sophie since 1738, when they were all young. By 1748, they were nearing adulthood.

On 2 March 1782, during the reign of her nephew and his wife, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, Sophie died at the age of forty-seven due to dropsy.

She was presumably aged fourteen in this portrait.
This was sent to her parents.
